This is the story of the S.S. Ventnor, which left Wellington, New Zealand on October 26th, 1902, on a mission to return the bodies of 499 Chinese gold miners to their place of birth in Guangdong, China. The ill-fated ship tragically sank ten miles off the coast of Hokianga, in the north of New Zealand. According to Chinese beliefs, their souls are restless at the bottom of the sea.
