The Scottish Government will set out why it believes an independent Scotland would automatically remain a member of the European Union in a year's time. It came as opposition leaders at Holyrood pounced on comments by the President of the European Commission which seem to suggest Scotland might have to re-apply for membership. EU officials have been stressing that they do not want to comment on specific situations in member states. In other news, the latest attempt to reduce the number of sex attacks in Scotland will see attitudes towards rape challenged. New adverts are being launched as part of the campaign which, this time, targets men. Police say they want to expose the myths surrounding what constitutes rape. Meanwhile, an international design competition has been launched to transform the civic heart of Glasgow. The work on the city's George Square is expected to begin next year. Councillors agreed to initial plans to give designers a "blank canvas" by approving the removal of all the statues, with the exception of the Cenotaph and the digging up the red tarmac surface. And; Cancer deaths have reached their highest level in more than 30 years. There have been 15,561 deaths in this year to June, the highest figure since recent records began in 1979. But the average age of death from cancer has risen from around 68 thirty years ago, to about 72. Also in sport, Scott Brown is optimistic he won't need to go under the knife again and is confident he'll play a significant role for Celtic and Scotland in the coming months. The Parkhead skipper - who underwent an ankle operation last season - has been troubled by a hip injury during the start of this campaign. This international version of STV News at Six is viewable world-wide. It has been edited for rights reasons, which also allows us to keep the programme online after the initial 24-hour broadcast window in the UK has passed. Viewers within the UK who want to watch the full episode 'as broadcast' should select the UK version of the programme.
