The former editor of the News of the World in Scotland has been arrested and charged in connection with Tommy Sheridan's defamation case against the newspaper six years ago. Bob Bird has been accused of attempting to pervert the course of justice. Mr Bird protested his innocence and said he was "sad it has come to this." In other news: “No more awards for just doing your job.” That was the message from a group of MPs who want to overhaul the honours system. They claim too many civil servants and celebrities are scooping everything from MBE's to knighthoods. They also say Scotland is getting too many awards for its size. But the government maintain the vast majority of awards go to community heroes. The housing charity Shelter says it's deeply concerned at a sharp rise in the number of people contacting them over fears about losing their home. The organisation received over fourteen thousand calls in the first six months of 2012 - a rise of almost forty percent in two years. A jury is considering its verdict in the case of a man accused of murdering a Lanarkshire pensioner by driving over him with his own car. Christopher Grenfell has admitted killing 76 year old James Simpson while trying to steal his car from outside his home, but he says it was an accident. And in sports: Celtic Park has played host to some electric Champions League nights in the past, but after a 4 year absence from the top table, and with a 15million + cheque hanging in the balance, tonight's game against Helsingborg is perhaps the biggest of them all. STV News understands Motherwell are close to completing a move for former Hearts midfielder Ryan Stevenson, after Stuart McCall admitted that Celtic made an approach for Chris Humphrey two weeks ago. Ally McCoist says Kirk Broadfoot has come to an agreement with Charles Green and the club to make his contract "null and void". Brendan Rodgers is likely to field a strong Liverpool side against Hearts tomorrow, after admitting to being impressed by John McGlynn's team at Tynecastle last week. The teams meet at Anfield in their Europa League qualifier with Liverpool leading 1-0 from the first leg. This international version of STV News at Six is viewable world-wide.
