Juries in murder trials could be told about the accused's previous convictions, under radical plans being put forward for a change in the Scottish legal system. The Scottish Law Commission is recommending the move but critics fear it puts at risk the presumption of innocent until proven guilty. A Jamaican who Scottish judges ruled was not a danger to society has been sentenced to life in prison for the rape of three women and assault of two young girls. Chan Wright carried out the attacks after successfully avoiding deportation following previous convictions in this country. Detectives believe there could be other victims who haven't yet come forward. Defence Minister Nick Harvey told Parliament this afternoon there were no plans to abolish the names of famous Scottish Regiments but he failed to re-assure MP's about the possibilities of further cuts to troop numbers in Scotland. He was taking during a debate initiated by the SNP. The former Labour Home Secretary Lord John Reid has told the Leveson Inquiry that he was in the dark about the initial police investigation into phone hacking at the News of the World. The ex MP told the inquiry that most of his time as Home Secretary was taken up with terrorist related matters when it emerged that Clive Goodman and Glenn Mulcaire had hacked the phones of members of the Royal household. A former detective has told the Arlene Fraser murder trial it had been a mistake to return her rings to her husband. Alan Smith said her family was convinced Nat had planted the rings in the estranged couple's Elgin home. A ten pound note to commemorate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee has been launched by the Royal Bank of Scotland. The note features different images of the Queen throughout the years and her connection with Scotland. A team of Scots scientists are behind a world leading trial, which it's believed could herald a major step forward in the treatment of strokes. Scottish Opera is 50 years old in June and to celebrate is planning a bumper season of performances across the country. After Alistair Johnston criticised former Rangers owner Sir David Murray, STV News has spoken to two former Sheffield United managers who give very different accounts of would-be Rangers owner Charles Green. Fraser Forster could become Neil Lennon's first signing of the summer after admitting to holding talks with the goalkeeper's representatives this afternoon.
