Show

This afternoon Scotland has honoured its Olympic and Paralympics heroes, with a parade through the streets of Glasgow. Thousands turned out to see the homecoming celebrations - which are continuing this evening. Around fifty athletes were on the floats to thank the fans for all their support. Sir Chris Hoy, who receives the Freedom of Edinburgh on Sunday, said he was amazed by the turn out. In other news: The future of the Halls of Broxburn meat processing plant is looking bleaker than ever tonight. Its owners, Vion, have rejected a Scottish Government deal to invest in the closure-threatened factory, where seventeen-hundred jobs are at risk. Nearly half of all elderly residents in care homes are being given sedatives to make them easier to look after. That's according to a controversial new report by Dundee University, which also says many people may be taking the drugs for much longer than necessary. A senior police officer has warned of the growing challenges and risks facing credit unions, from organised criminal gangs. A conference in Glasgow heard that the co-operatives, which lend to low income and vulnerable households, are potential targets for criminals laundering money. Staff is being given training to help them to identify potential illegal transactions. Legislation is to be introduced to prevent students from the rest of the UK exploiting dual nationality rights to avoid paying fees at Scottish universities. Students here don't have to pay tuition fees while those in the rest of UK do. Under European law, students from outside the UK are also exempt from fees. Now they have to prove they've lived in another EU country for at least three months, before they qualify for exemption. The body of a forty foot whale has washed up on a beach in Angus. It was discovered on the coastline near Arbroath golf club early this morning. Marine experts have confirmed it's not one of the pilot whales rescued following a mass stranding in Fife earlier this month. And in sports: Hibs new signing Ryan McGivern says he's relishing the chance to go up against his former manager Kenny Shiels in his Hibs debut at Easter Road. Thomas Rogne has been fined by manager Neil Lennon for comments he made about a new contract while on international duty with Norway. At Ibrox Lee Wallace has been rewarded for his loyalty to Rangers with a new 5-year contract. This international version of STV News at Six is viewable world-wide. It has been edited for rights reasons, which also allows us to keep the programme online after the initial 24-hour broadcast window in the UK has passed. Viewers within the UK who want to watch the full episode 'as broadcast' should select the UK version of the programme.
