Virgin Atlantic is bidding to launch its first domestic flights between Edinburgh and Heathrow. The airline plans to link the Capital and Aberdeen airport with the London hub by next summer. The announcement comes just a week after the company lost the rail franchise for the West Coast mainline, but Virgin says its decision is based on increasing short-haul competition. In other news; a court has heard that a man accused of murdering a pensioner with his own car, told a friend that he'd reversed over him. The claim was made at the trial of Christopher Grenfell - who is charged with killing seventy-six year-old James Simpson last year, at his Lanarkshire home. In local news; Attacks on firefighters in the Lothian and Borders area have risen in the last year. Figures released today show that while nationally attacks on crews have fallen by a third, they increased in the east from thirty-three to forty-one. Reports of verbal and physical attacks spiked on November the fifth - Guy Fawkes Night. And; Police investigating robberies in the capital say they have made almost one hundred arrests over the last two months. The crackdown saw officers target criminals through CCTV and plain-clothed patrols. They say it's resulted in a reduction in the number of muggings in the city. Also in sport; Neil Lennon says his side won't sit in and play for a draw in Helsingborg tonight. The Celtic boss says they have been boosted by the rare away win in Helsinki in the last round, and is looking for a repeat performance tonight.
