Braced for red alert - gale force winds battering the central belt move east. Strong winds from the tail-end of Hurricane Katia are battering parts of Scotland. Severe weather warnings remain in place for many areas and people venturing out are advised to take care, although so far, there are no reports of severe travel disruption. But as predicted the Ayrshire coast was first to feel the force of the strong winds. men and women in the Lothians are putting their lives at risk because of embarrassment. That's the warning from a bowel cancer charity, which found that forty percent would rather not talk to their doctor about a concern despite the risks of ignoring symptoms. It comes as new figures show the chances of surviving the disease vary dramatically depending on where you live in the UK. Far reaching reforms to Britiain's banks have been put forward by a Government appointed commission. It will mean the Royal Bank of Scotland and other UK-based banks will have to separate their high street operations from the high-risk investment banking, which is widely blamed for the international financial crisis. The report by Sir John Vickers has been welcomed by politicians from all sides but could mean more expensive banking for customers. Teachers are to be balloted on strike action over proposed changes to pensions. Scotland's largest teaching union say the proposals would see teachers pay more for pension contributions, but receive less in retirement. The EIS is urging members to vote in favour of a strike. Ballot papers will be sent out later this month, with strike action expected in November. It's believed Scottish ministers are in talks with the UK government about the proposed changes. Jim Boyd from Larbert, who received a kidney from his wife six weeks ago, is one of hundreds of Scots with renal problems benefitting from a computer system, that allows them to access their latest test results and share information with clinicians, from their home. It's hoped the service will eventually be rolled out to patients with other chronic conditions. Police in Edinburgh are hunting two teenagers after a Chinese man was racially assaulted in the capital at the weekend. The thirty-four year-old victim was making his way home near Nicolson Street during the early hours of Saturday morning when he was racially abused by a male and and a female aged around seventeen before he was knocked to the ground. In Sport, Graham Stack says Hibs can build on their nil - nil draw with Aberdeen - in a match that attracted less than nine-thousand fans. Stack kept a clean sheet against the Dons yesterday, but Colin Calderwood's side have managed only one win in six league games.
