The oil and gas industry could provide lifetime employment for a generation of Scots according to the First Minister. Alex Salmond today underlined the importance of the sector to the Scottish economy as fresh data suggested that many businesses are pessimistic about the outlook in the year ahead. In other news; a suggestion by a leading police officer to charge people a premium rate when they phone the emergency services has been dismissed as nonsense by critics. The idea has been raised in an effort to cut the number of nuisance calls. David Hamilton says he's trying to contribute to a national debate on the issue. And in sport; The Premier League Darts has been expanded from eight to ten players. They'll contest the first nine weeks of the competition, which arrives in Aberdeen on Valentines day. The bottom two will then be eliminated. There are two Scots, Gary Anderson and Robert Thornton, in the field. World Champ, Phil Taylor, and runner up Michael Van Gerwan, are also competing. This international version of STV News at Six is viewable world-wide. It has been edited for rights reasons, which also allows us to keep the programme online after the initial 24-hour broadcast window in the UK has passed.
