French oil giant Total says an operation to stop a gas leak on its stricken Elgin platform in the North Sea has been successful. The installation was evacuated seven weeks ago when when the gas began leaking. A team of specialist engineers began work yesterday to stem the leak by pumping heavy mud into the well.
